Item Description
Gene Autry is among the most successful of the singing cowboys. His only equal may be Roy Rogers. Autry started out as a yodeling cowboy. He secured a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1929. From there he made the jump to films and radio. Autry holds some impressive recording records. He had the first certified Gold Record. He also recorded over 600 songs, over 300 of which he wrote or co-wrote. His record sales are phenomenal, especially considering the era they came out in. He has sold off 100 million records. Movie success came from his series of musical westerns. That movie success translated well to radio. When television showed up, he took to the medium like a duck to water and became one of TV’s earliest successes. Autry first appeared in comics in a series for Fawcett. That lasted eleven issues. They are usually distinguished by their painted or drawn covers. When he went to Dell, the numbering continued, but after issue #12 he made several appearances in Dell Four Color. In 1946 Dell gave him his own title again, but started the numbering with one. Those issues usually featured a photo-cover. That series lasted an impressive 121 issues and was canceled in 1959. The pages for this issue offered are off-white. According to the CGC Census, this copy is recognized as the highest graded copy they have seen. This copy is also recognized as belonging to the Mile High Pedigree.
