Item Description
8.75x14" autograph book w/ applied paper label on front reading "Visitors To Joseph B. Back's Cigar Shop Empire State Building". After his failed presidential bid Al Smith was the President of Empire State Inc., the company that built and operated the Empire State building. The building opened on May 1, 1931 and this visitor book was in the lobby cigar store. The book contains hundreds of autographs most from average Americans who happened to visit before April 23, 1934, when this book ends. Autographs of note include: a large "Al Smith" inscribed "Welcome To New York" on the first page, actor Gary Cooper, actress Mary Pickford, boxer Max Schmeling, boxer Primo Carnera and violinist Yehudi Menuhin. The book also contains signatures of numerous foreign dignitaries and visitors from around the world. Book has moderate overall wear, most notably are minor loss at edges, spine wear and chips of surface paper loss. VG. Signatures remain bold and Exc. Comes w/Hake's COA and JSA/LOA.
