Item Description
1" button with curl naming Parisian Nov. Co., Chicago pictures flowing American flag with text above "Eat Checkers Popcorn" and slogan in quotation marks below "Salute The Flag". This slogan appears on several buttons and watch fobs made to commemorate the deadly events of that year.  The slogan and items that use it were inspired by events beginning in 1914 when nine American sailors ashore for supplies were arrested in Tampico, Mexico. Although they were released with an apology, U.S. Admiral Henry Mayo was so incensed he demanded the raising of the American flag on Mexican soil and a special 21-gun salute. A few days later Wilson ordered the U.S. Naval force to Tampico Bay. Word then reached the White House that a German ship was unloading munitions at Vera Cruz and Wilson ordered the taking of the city resulting in 17 U.S. deaths. Eventually Argentina, Brazil and Chile mediated the dispute to forestall additional hostilities.  Scarce and essentially Mint.
