Item Description
3". Marshall Levin inscription on verso reads "Providence, R. I./ NAACP/ 1974/ 500." Only 500 were produced in 1974. This button was in commemoration of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, which in 1778 became the first black militia. Any man who was accepted into the regiment was granted freedom from prior enslavement. The unit served with distinction in the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Yorktown, among other battles during the Revolution. Only minor wear. NM.
