It appears that the Chinese man is cheating and a small vignette above the main image shows the white men discovering the cheating and assaulting him in retaliation. Song refers to the Chinese as a "heathen...wretched guzzler of tea" and laments Chinese labor as "cheap" and ruining the country. Moderate wear w/chipping along the edges and small areas of loss. Tear along the spine in center, w/some moisture stains on the interior pages. Fine. Many Chinese laborers came to the United States during the mid to late 1800s, particularly on the West Coast. Anti-Chinese sentiment arouse during this period leading to anti-Chinese legislation, which began w/the Page Act of 1875, and continued w/the Angell Treaty of 1880. Further legislation restricting Chinese immigration included the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, as well as the subsequent Scott Act and Geary Act.
