Newspaper coverage of the lynchings detailed that the two men were accused of the murder of a local Night Marshal. Barnes reportedly confessed and implicated Walker (some news reports referred to Walker as "Bob Bryant"). Barnes was hanged on the 7th, while an angry mob overpowered the jailer and removed Walker shortly after he was apprehended. The mob then lynched Walker on the same pole as Barnes in the early hours of November 8th. The newspaper reported that the bodies were "riddled with bullets."
