Item Description
3" dia. cello button w/cardboard back does not have maker's name, but back has handwritten notation in blue ink reading "Freddie Mombo - Dec. 4, 1959." The first time the illustrated boy who became MAD magazine's mascot appeared on a button was in 1900 (see Button Power, page 22). He made his first appearance on a MAD publication in 1954, w/artist Norman Mingo painting his defining portrait in 1956, editor Al Feldstein naming the "What, Me Worry?" boy Alfred E. Neuman. Four years later, this made him the perfect candidate, in a long Philadelphia area high school tradition, to appear on the "Class Of '60'" button from the all boys Bishop Neumann Roman Catholic high school in South Philadelphia. Wearing a jaunty beret and sporting a goatee, this borrowed Neuman declares "Man I'm Beat," a clear reference to the beatnik movement of the time. Cardboard backing has some rings of rust staining from other buttons, but front remains glossy and Exc. A very limited number would have been produced and this is the just the third example we've seen in our 58 years. Rare, and not even featured in Collectibly Mad by Grant Geissman.
