Item Description
1.5x2-5/8". This minor league set, issued in 1912 by the Imperial Tobacco Co., is the only tobacco baseball set issued in Canada. Designated as C46 in the American Card Catalog, each sepia-toned card features a distincitive card design that pictures the player inside an oval surrounded by a simulated woodgrain background featuring a bat, ball and glove in the borders. The player's last name appears in captial letters in a panel beneath the oval. (An exception is the card of James Murray, whose caption includes both first and last names.) The backs include the player's name and team at the top, followed by a brief biography. The 90 subjects in the set are members of the eight teams in the Eastern League (Rochester, Toronto, Buffalo, Newark, Providence, Baltimore, Montreal and Jersey City), even though the card backs refer to it as the International League. The set contains many players with major league experience, including Hall of Famers Joe Kelley and Joe "Iron Man" McGinnity.
Bob Gaunt was a career minor league pitcher.
