Item Description
1.25" no maker and with a brass luster collet. Following his loss to FDR in 1940, Willkie remained politically active. He visited FDR, as an ally, on January 19,1941 at the White House and accepted the role of FDR's informal representative to Britain. On arrival, he told the press he wanted the US to give all possible support to England. In late 1941, he lobbied Republican congressmen to repeal the Neutrality Act.  In early 1942, he considered a run for New York Governor but concluded the Dewey forces were too strong.  Then he proposed another foreign trip  to FDR and announced he would visit the Soviet Union, China and the Middle East. He met with Stalin and was hosted by Chiang Kai-shek. He returned from his 49 day trip and on October, 26, 1942 made a radio speech "Report to the People" heard by an estimated "36 Million Americans" as referenced on this button. The speech preceded the April, 1943 publication of his book "One World" which was an immediate best seller with a million copies sold in the first month.
The speech and book were both in preparation for a 1944 second presidential run but he withdrew in the face of Dewey's momentum. Glossy, Rare and Exc.
