Item Description
1.25" w/blank back paper w/handwritten inscription "Uncle Ed/4/18/1902." Tight cello separation along collet from 12 to 1 o'clock that likely occured in manufacturing. Extremely Fine, but displays above grade. First we've encountered wnames above and only the second of this design known to us, the other not bearing names above. A rare opportunity at an important New York coattail.
Sulzer served as Congressman from 1895-1912 and was a figure in Tammany machine politics. He later served as Gov. of NY and was impeached in 1913. Just weeks after his impeachment he won a seat in the New York State Assembly, the body that had just voted for his ouster. He then made an unsuccessful attempt to run for Governor again in 1914 on a joint ticket of the Prohibition and the American Parties on a dry and anti-Tammany platform. He siphoned enough support from the Tammany-backed candidate to lead to the election of the Republican nominee, w/Sulzer acting as the spoiler in that campaign.
