Cox's running mate, he was only 38 years old. While the choice surprised many insiders his family name carried notoriety, critical home state of New York and as a Wilsonian moderate he helped balance the ticket. Ultimately the Cox/Roosevelt ticket would suffer a landslide defeat but FDR toured and spoke widely establishing a national presence among Democrats.
