Item Description
16.25x19.75". 1836. President Jackson and King Louis-Phillipe of France face one another w/their respective navies approaching. In reference to the debts France owed to the United States as agreed upon in the Franco-American Treaty of 1831. Jackson holds up the treaty to King Louis-Philippe. Text below the French side in margin reads "The debilitated situation of a monarchal Government when puffed up by pride and self-importance, whose resources must wrung from the people's hands. The difficulties to which such a state must ever be exposed." By contrast, under the American side, text reads: "The flourishing condition of a well-formed, industrious Republic. The willingness displayed by the citizen of a free state to serve his country with his blood and fortune." Slight age toning seen in center of the print, w/moderate wear and handling, most notably along the top edge. VF. Rex & Patti Stark Collection.
