Item Description
11.75x18". The satirical print mocks the 1866 Union convention, that was held in August of 1866 w/the intent of creating a new political party that could form a coalition to help push through President Andrew Johnson's agenda. The White House is in the upper left corner, w/a "Dead Dog" representing Johnson in the White House lawn, as a Confederate flag waves on top of the president's residence. A large doghouse is seen in the right w/"Wigwam" above as two of Johnson's supporters, Edgar Cowen and Rood Doolittle act as guard dogs. Various dogs representing states, approach the wigwam muzzled, w/South Carolina also having its genitals muzzled. The convention ultimately failed to form a party to oppose the Radical Republican faction at odds w/Johnson, eventually setting the stage for Johnson's impeachment in 1868. A few tiny pin holes in the corners w/light edge wear and light scattered surface wear and handling. VF. Will frame above grade. Rex & Patti Stark Collection.
