Item Description
13.5x24.5" matte w/8.5x19.5" opening. "King & Baird, Printers, 607 Sansom Street, Philadelphia" in print at bottom. Bold waving American flag at the top w/Lincoln and Johnson's full name prominently in center. Below are the names of the 26 electors of Pennsylvania for the National Union Ticket. Some faint moisture marks affecting top edge and left center. Otherwise only minor handling. VF. That it is printed on fabric makes clear this was intended as a poster broadside promoting the ticket to PA voters. Lincoln took Pennsylvania's 26 Electoral votes by a mere 3.5% margin on his way to a 212 to 21 victory over Gen. George McClellan. Though it has the appearance of a landslide the historic election, occurring amidst the American Civil War, saw Lincoln all but defeated by August with many in his party calling for another convention to nominate a new ticket. But September saw the Union's newfound military success. The fall of Atlanta to Gen. Sherman and Gen. Sheridan's victory at the Battle of Winchester helped push public sentiment back towards the President. Additionally rising notions in the North that the Democratic platform was treasonous due to their convention plank that the war as a failure further aided and a mid October Union victory at Cedar Creek propelled Lincoln's campaign to victory. Founder of the New York Times and noted Lincoln advocate said of the election "Tuesday's silent battle of voters has decided the destiny of the republic." Waving flag graphic and bold design make this fabric broadside an incredible artifact of the period and among the few to feature striking full color printing. Only three examples known to us.
