Item Description
Stiff cardboard 1/16” thick by 8.25 x 10.25” has attached cello oval 4-9/16 wide by 6-5/8” tall w/hinged wire easel reverse. The gray cardboard has raised designs accented in silver. Lower right corner has narrow moisture stain 5” long and light on the vertical edge and a bit darker on the 5” horizontal edge. There is minor cello damage of a small edge dent at 9:30. Also confined to the lower text panel is an edge curl hairline cello crack from 6-8 but barely seen plus on the text panel a couple small age marks with hairline surface cracks of .25”, .5”, and .75” showing little. The cello has full gloss and is over photographic paper without a dot screen. At top, “Frederick Douglass” is alongside “Dr. N.F. Mossell-Founder” surrounded by ribbon and wreath designs. The text panel has founding year of 1895 as well as 1909 while the building cornerstone is inscribed 1908 so this impressive celluloid was produced for 1909 completion of the $100,000.00 new building at 1532 Lombard St. Dr. Mossell was the first black physician to graduate from Univ. of Pa Medical School and his hospital and nurses training school was the second black hospital in America. Fine and only example known to us.
