Item Description
AFA graded and encapsulated header/bin assembly store display constructed of thin cardboard similar to what's used for the backdrop on the Sears Cantina Adventure Playset (most subsequent Kenner display headers were made of corrugated cardboard). Display was designed to hold stiff illustrated cardboard envelopes, each containing sealed kit which was available for limited time and marked "Not To Be Sold After December 31st, 1977." Created by Kenner to satisfy the Christmas 1977 demand for Star Wars action figures, the envelope contained a cardboard stand, stickers, and a coupon to be redeemed via mail for the first set of four action figures (Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca and R2-D2) in early 1978. An example of one of these certificates is included w/display, situated as it would've appeared in stores. Whereas the certificate features a partially obscure illustration of Kenner's first 12 Star Wars action figures, the display's header features actual size photos of the action figures that would've been secured via the Early Bird Certificate. Of note, the Luke Skywalker figure shown is the coveted Double-Telescoping variety. Header also includes printed instructions "To Get Your Set Of Star Wars Figures," noting that figures would arrive between Feb. 1 and June 1, 1978. While not visible as assembled, the header has a bottom part almost the same size as the part w/the character illustrations, but is black and features the silver borders extending approx. two-thirds of its length. This is folded under and would have underneath the items in the display box, the weight of those items keeping it in place since there was no other means of holding it down. While display and certificate show some scattered wear from use (moderate color rubs to front of display bin), this is still an eye-catching example of this rare store display, a rightful piece of Kenner Star Wars history. One of the most sought-after Star Wars display pieces in the hobby, this is the first time this display has ever been offered at auction. Due to size and/or weight of this item, shipping charges may be substantial. Please contact us w/any shipping inquiries prior to close of auction.
