Item Description
1.25x2-7/8. High quality glossy real photo front, text on back. Rare Japanese baseball card issue depicting Grove during his tenure w/the Philadelphia Athletics, and quite early in his MLB career. The only reason that this card even exists is thanks to the 1931 U.S. baseball touring team that came to play a series of exhibition games against the locals. Joining Grove on this trip were fellow HOF’ers Lou Gehrig and Frank Frisch amongst other U.S. stars. Pre-War Japanese baseball cards depicting MLB stars are almost non-existent, especially one featuring an upper-echelon HOF’er such as Lefty Grove. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only third party graded example ever offered at auction. Lefty played for the A’s from 1925-33 before spending the second half of his MLB career w/the Boston Red Sox from 1934-41. Grove is widely regarded as one of the top three left-handed pitchers of all-time, finishing his career with a record of 300-141 along with a 3.06 ERA and 2,266 strikeouts. Lefty won two pitching triple crowns as well as an MLB MVP. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. Richard Merkin Collection.
