Item Description
2-3/8x2-7/8". Set of 24. ACC #R124. Choice color art fronts, backs have text relating to that illustration. Back text also notes "One Of A Series Of 192" but there were only 24 made for this U.S. issue. Each back has text "Printed In U.S.A" are all are also variety "Montreal" as part of the World Wide Gum Co. location vs. "Boston." The set designated as "Printed In Canada" had 48 cards vs. the 24 of this U.S. set. Cards in this set of 24 include: Black Beard, Capt. Kidd, Capt. Jean Lafitte, Pirate Gold, Walking The Plank, Dead Men Tell No Tales, and more. While this is a highly coveted non-sport set on its own, what takes this to another level is the fact this is a full copyright file set as submitted to the U.S. Patent Office before the cards were sold in stores. The story as relayed to us by non-sport historian and Benjamin Guide contributor is that two complete sets were submitted at the time, one held by the Federal Government and the other returned to World Wide Gum, which is the set we are offering here. Back of each card has ink stamp date of "May 25, 1933" as well as "©CIA A" and then an individual number running consecutively from "121467" on card #1 to "121490" on card #24. Most card backs also have some tiny check marks or other notations as originally cataloged. Additionally, all have been designated "Copyright File Copy" by CGC.

All cards are CGC graded. Grades and number of cards per are as follows - 5 EX (4 cards) - #2, 4, 9 and 11; 1.5 Fair (4 cards) -  #3, 10, 13 and 22; 1 Poor (1 card) - #21; AU Authentic (15 cards) - #1, 5-8, 12, 14-20 and 23-24.
Set comes w/5x7.5" wax paper wrapper w/great art. This has been applied to a photo album page and is stuck, removing it will result in damage. This wrapper just comes along. We have offered countless non-sport sets over our 58 years, none more important or impressive than this. John Grossman Collection.
