Of L.E. 1900 Des Moines, Iowa.” Superb art  showing an uniformed  locomotive fireman with one hand on the  chain of a firebox door and the other on a coal shovel handle.  Debs himself was a locomotive fireman as a youth and in 1880 became Grand Secretary of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and editor the union magazine. By the 1890’s he was a founding member of several socialist parties and in 1900, the year of this convention of his union brothers, he made his first of five presidential runs.
