Item Description
7/8” w/Bastian back paper. This button from “Patterson N.J.1914” was given to those making a contribution to the “Salem Sufferers.” The “Salem Sufferers” were some 18,000 people made homeless or jobless by what was called The Great Salem Fire  of June 25, 1914 which saw 1,376 buildings destroyed. It was among the last great industrial fires that plagued American cities in the 19th century. With the city’s  largest employers destroyed, the tragedy became an impetus for the creation of the United States Employment Service. One known to us. NM.
