Item Description
1.75" w/W&H back paper used only 1898-1900. Top names "G. Akoun" referencing Gaston Akoun who became famous as a World’s Fair promoter. His first exhibit was at the Columbian Expo in 1893 w/title similar to this 1898 button. "A Street In Cairo" featured snake charmers, camel rides and the scandalous dancer known as Little Egypt. Akoun not only brought his exhibit to the Trans-Mississippi Exhibition, but in 1901 he was also manager of the Pan-American Midway’s exhibit Streets of Cairo. His career continued at Jamestown in 1907 w/the exhibit "Beautiful Orient" and "Streets Of Cairo" located at the western end of the Warpath. This button has dispersed tiny lt. gray dots on the very outer edge but still fabulous color and full gloss. We know of one other 1898 button he issued but that is a 1.25" in b/w. VF. One known to us. Rare.
