Item Description
For the second consecutive season, a Cuban League baseball card set was produced to promote Caramelo Deportivo. This second series expanded the number of cards included to 185 w/each measuring 1-7/8x2.5". Card fronts feature a bw photo. Card backs identify the player and supply their Cuban League affiliation. In addition, a candy ad appears on back bottom. Thin paper stock as well as the issuance of an album for these to be mounted in account for the prominently lesser conditions whenever these rarities are found.
McDaniels began his professional career with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1940, posting records of 3-0, 7-0 and 10-1 between 1941-43. In 1946, Booker jumped to the Mexican League, where he would play for San Luis, Vera Cruz and Mexico City. Returning to the Monarchs in 1949, McDaniels posted a 4-2 record with a 2.62 ERA. At age 38, Booker would join the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League, becoming the league's first black ballplayer. Although at the end of his career at this point, McDaniels would still post respectable numbers of 8-9 and 3-4 during those final two seasons.
