Item Description
1-7/8x2-5/8". 1945-46 Caramelo Deportivo baseball card set. Printed in black and white on very thin paper, the cards were intended to be pasted into an album. Fronts have a card number but no player identification, which instead appears on the back along with biographical data and the name of the manufacturer. Many former and future Major Leaguers and stars of the Negro Leagues are found on the checklist (found in the Standard Catalogue Of Vintage Baseball Cards), oftentimes marking their only career contemporary baseball card appearance.

Crespo played only two seasons in the U.S. Negro Leagues, with the New York Cubans in 1940 and once again in 1946. The remainder of Crespo's summers were played in Mexico while he made numerous winter ball trips to his native Cuba. Alejandro compiled a lifetime batting average of .277 playing primarily for Cienfuegos in Cuba. Crespo was also a consistent .300+ hitter during his time in the Mexican League.

Richard Merkin Collection.
