Ty Cobb has held the #1 spot in MLB history for nearly a century as the all-time career batting average leader with a .366 mark and his all-time record of 4,191 base hits was not eclipsed until 1985 when Pete Rose surpassed his total on the way to a record 4,256 career base hits. Cobb was one of five inaugural members of the first National Baseball Hall of Fame class of 1936.
