Item Description
1.25” w/W&H back paper. TR sits astride the ark's cabin roof clad in safari outfit holding his rifle and smiling broadly w/prominent teeth beneath his iconic pince-nez glasses surrounded by grinning hippo, giraffe, zebra, rhino and a pair of lions. Design inspired by TR's return to America from his African safari in 1910. The button offered here surfaced many years back in a Pittsburgh estate auction from a man who was once the area salesman for W&H. This design is more typically found as a 1.75" button w/ “Goerke Co.” text. While examples of that slightly larger size are notably rare this 1.25” variety is one of only two known, both in similar condition having age toning limited to the very top edge from 11-1 o'clock extending inward less than 1/8”. For accuracy we also note scattered faint background marks and minimal surface wear only under magnification. Technical Fine but displaying above grade w/full gloss, perfect centering and superb color. A special opportunity to obtain one of the best-ever designed buttons. Roger Richert Collection.
