Item Description
14-1/8x19-7/8" on vellum. Original first printing w/"The Bindweed Press San Francisco" immediately above the right side of the ticket strip. Promotes concerts September 16-17 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, CA. Designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley. Mouse & Kelley utilized a 19th Century illustration by Edward Joseph Sullivan from an Arabian poetry publication "The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam" that they discovered at the San Francisco Public Library. This image is easily the most recognizable of the Family Dog series and has risen to the level of icon in the canon of American popular culture as the definitive image representing the most enduring band of the San Francisco psychedelic scene that spawned the 1960s cultural revolution. Recognized immediately as a dynamic image, these were snapped up by the hippie community who subsequently carried them through life's travels, tacking them up at every stop along the way. This universal adoration has left the population of surviving pieces in mostly ragged condition w/color fading, heavy corner losses and/or extensive restoration being the norm elevating high grade examples into the stratosphere as investment worthy artifacts of popular culture history. The present offering is as nice an example as has ever been offered publicly graded and encapsulated by CGC 9.8 NM/Mint. Whether you are trying to complete a high-grade FD set, a hardcore Deadhead, an art world savant or the kind of collector who seeks the very finest material in any category, this poster it a true trophy piece worthy of reaching for that will endue a pride in ownership almost unrivaled in the psychedelic poster world.
