Item Description
15.5x21.75" hand pulled screen print on thin stock. c. 1970. Design features a rendering of the iconic John Filo's Pulitzer Prize winning photo of 14-year-old Mary Ann Vecchio kneeling over the body of Jeffrey Miller framed by text "Unite Now". Filo's image became an instant and tragic icon of the era. His efforts to publish the image, the last frame on the roll of film, are now legendary- having seen a Guardsman cutting electrical wires on campus he quickly hid the film in the hub cap of his car then drove to his hometown of Tarentum, PA. There he developed the film at the newspaper offices of the Valley Daily News who helped distribute the image through the Associated Press wire service where it subsequently appeared around the world the following morning. The image immediately became an important part of the movement, and this poster was likely produced in the days following the campus shooting. A horizontal fold at top left, otherwise only light handling. Exc. The only example we have encountered in 57 years. A powerful and moving call to action from the turbulent era.
