Item Description
Carter Harrison, Jr. was 5-time Chicago Mayor and 1904 Democratic presidential hopeful. While the overall theme of this button is political graft and corruption, there are visuals and words in need of research to complete understanding. Upper scene titled "Money To Burn" with sub-head "City Hall." Left to right Uncle Sam with "Hands Up" label points to apparent working man with "Help" on his forehead who tries to hand $50 bill to man labeled "Justice-Hands Off." At far right is "Harrison" (first 4 letters incomplete as printed) portrait partially overlapping "Cleveland" face. Lower scene titled "A Consultation" with far left label "Comptroller's Office" and bottom edge "Lesson Analyzed." At right scowling man sits next to jail door while at left are two men in convict outfits. Above them is design of paper money alongside open oven with "D.C." above and "$4,000,000" below. 1.75", no maker, covered tin back with bar pin - a manufacturing style common around 1904. Faint tan dots on side edge, but just a few barely visible on extreme front edges. At top, left of center, is .25" cut and at middle center and below are 4 deep but short .25" scratches. While these 5 marks can be seen in reflected light, all blend extremely well and in most circumstances are truly invisible. Rare.
