Item Description
5x7” glossy silver gelatin photograph. This baseball club was a member of the Cuban Winter League. Posed on a ballfield are a total of 14 team members are pictured in full uniforms, including Vic Harris, whose Negro/Latin American resume would leave him knocking on the door for Hall of Fame enshrinement. Also shown are fellow US Negro/Cuban League stars: Sam Bankhead, Santos Amaro, Jose Maria Fernandez and Tetelo Vargas. Vic Harris began his U.S. Negro Leagues career in 1925 with the Chicago American Giants, where he would only spend one more season before moving on to the Homestead Grays. Harris was a star outfielder for the Grays before becoming player/manager of the historic ball club which would capture nine consecutive Negro League pennants from 1937-45. Harris also starred in Latin America spending numerous winters playing in Cuba and Puerto Rico during the 1930s-40s. A true five-tool talent, Tetelo Vargas began his US Negro Leagues career in 1927 w/the Cuban Stars. Subsequently, Vargas would become a star outfielder for the 1938-44 New York Cubans. However, his Latin American baseball exploits were what really set Tetelo apart from many of the other Negro League stars of the day. During the 1940s, he split his time between the Cuban, Puerto Rican and Mexican Winter Leagues. Front lower left has stamped photographer’s text “Hernadez Studio Santa Clara.” Bottom margin has inked text and back has inked name at one corner. Trace of margin wear w/small bits of missing paper along right edge. Image remains bold and sharp. Richard Merkin Collection.
