Item Description
6.25x9” glossy silver gelatin photograph. Great full-length batting pose of the “Cuban Comet” during his earliest professional baseball days w/the US Negro League’s New York Cubans baseball club. Minoso is one of the very few National Baseball Hall of Famers who had already become a bona-fide star in the Negro Leagues prior to embarking on an all-star MLB career as well. He began his US Negro Leagues career in 1946 w/the New York Cubans, where he would remain through the 1948 season, after which, Minoso would sign a professional baseball contract w/the Cleveland Indians in 1949. He would spend the majority of his 1949 season, after his brief stint w/the Indians, playing for the Pacific Coast League’s San Diego ball club, where he would remain through the 1950 season. Minoso would subsequently join the Chicago White Sox in time for the 1951 season and immediately led the AL in stolen bases during his first three full MLB seasons. He would divide the remainder of his MLB career between Chicago and Cleveland, finishing w/an impressive lifetime .298 batting average to go along with 186 home runs, 205 stolen bases and 189 hit by pitches. Following his summers playing ball in the US, Minoso would make the trek to his native Cuba and played winter ball virtually every season over there aside from a short stint in Mexico. Although long overdue, Minnie Minoso was ultimately recognized for his tremendous career accomplishments w/election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022. All over creasing w/some surface paper breaks and wear, 2.5” bottom margin tear but this is more seen on back than front. Despite the obvious wear, photo remains glossy and image is sharp and distinct. Richard Merkin Collection.
