Item Description
6.25x7.25” glossy silver gelatin photograph. Presented here is a great opportunity to pick up a Type I image showing three New York Yankees Hall of Fame mainstays enjoying a peak season of their American League dominance. From their 1938 World Championship season are (L-R): Lou Gehrig (1B), Jacob Ruppert (Owner) and Joe McCarthy (Manager). Gehrig first joined the New York Yankees in 1923. However, 1925 would mark the beginning of Gehrig’s most recognized MLB record, a consecutive games played streak of 2,130 that would stand for more than half a century until broken by Cal Ripken Jr. in 1995. During his 17-year MLB career, Lou would put up some of the most astounding offensive numbers ever, culminating w/a .340 career batting average along w/493 home runs, 1,995 RBI’s, 1,888 runs scored and a career OPS of 1.080. Gehrig would likely have added substantially to those career numbers until he was stricken by an incurable disease ALS during the 1939 season, when he was finally forced to remove himself from the lineup. Tragically, Gehrig would pass away only two years later. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame via a special election in 1939. Ruppert purchased the New York Yankees prior to the 1915 MLB season and would retain ownership until his death in 1939. Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012. Following a five-year stint managing the Chicago Cubs of the National League, Joe McCarthy took over the managerial reigns of the New York Yankees in 1931 and would remain at the helm for the next 16 seasons, winning a total of 8 AL pennants during that time along w/seven World Series titles. Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1957. Photo reverse has “Wide World Photos” ink stamp text, pencil notations and paper remnants. On Lou’s chest, to the right of the “NY” logo there are two tiny missing pieces of paper. Few spots of missing surface paper to margins. Other handling wear but image remains sharp and distinct.
