Item Description
1.5" w/back paper of hometown button maker Sheperd which includes city promo text "Remember Home Industry." Paper has penciled number "3339," perhaps as a serial number for a contest. This event was created as a rebuttal to a New York reporter’s claim in 1885 that St. Paul was "another Siberia unfit for human habitation." Taking inspiration from Montreal’s winter festival which started in 1883, the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce organized their first event in 1886 to showcase the city's vibrant winter culture. The highlight was a massive ice palace. The event became the first US winter carnival. While showing devils w/pitchforks tending the fires of hell w/the motto "Make It A Hot One," the St. Paulians covered all the bases and added a pair of horseshoes to the design just in case hell freezes over. Minor trace of age/wear only seen upon close inspection. Still glossy and Exc. Few are known and this is the first we have offered in our 58 years. A true pin-back rarity.
