Item Description
In 1905, publisher A.C. McClurg & Co. forged a relationship with young artist St. John. Their first collaboration was "The Face In The Pool," a fairy tale which did not exactly set the world on fire. McClurg hired St. John in 1915 to provide bw chapter headings for the second Tarzan novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs. "The Return Of Tarzan" was originally serialized in "New Story" magazine in 1913, with dust jacket cover art by N. C. Wyeth. The third novel of the series, "The Beasts Of Tarzan" featured St. John art for color wrap-around dust jacket, bw frontispiece, title page illustrations and an additional 38 pen and ink drawings to accompany text. Over the next 20 years, a new Tarzan novel was produced every year featuring St. John art. St. John illustrated other McClurg books as well as the occasional book for Rand McNally as well as teaching at the Chicago Art Institute and the American Academy of Art. In 1976, Russ Cochran published the first volume of "Library Of Illustration," which reproduced St. John's illustrations on coated paper. In 1980, Cochran was in Chicago and visited St. John's former studio which was then occupied by Jim Romano. Romano gave him a tour and showed him several St. John paintings as well as the ornate carved table and chair we are offering here. After some negotiation, Cochran purchased a large painting as well as this c. 1900-1910 table and chair. 34.25x54.5x28" high oak flat top table with a quarter-cut oak top and a finger-fluted, molded edge with w/ bowed drawers in base, 1 drawer bottom replaced with Masonite. Foliate, "C" scroll carving with large masks and sabre legs ending in claw feet. Center shelf to hold books. Original surface. Desk shows wear with two 1-2" broken pieces on front legs. Left front leg has repaired crack. Fine-. Comes along with a turn of the 20th century mahogany carved chair with scroll carved ears and open carved center cartouche base with a serpentine "X" stretcher with center carved finial on carved legs. Chair has been re-upholstered with old mauve upholstery. Upholstery shows obvious wear with under seat netting having large tears. 2" broken pieces on each front leg. Fine. Although we are unsure if this library table was used as a desk by St. John, it and the accompanying chair came from the St. John estate.
