Auction #205 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1426 in auction 205
Item Description
This piece is 2-3/8" tall. Reverse has vertical bar pin with clever safety catch and below this is stamped the serial number "66." At the top of the back, partially obscured by a circular brass plate is the name of the maker "King &" plus a second name only partially readable. The front of the badge has minor age to the brass luster but still displays beautifully with the word "Police" on a ribbon of blue enamel with oval portrait of buffalo head below while above is a convex 1-1/8" dome of silver metal that includes faint pattern of latitude and longitude lines surrounding the female figures in relief representing North and South America. In Frederick Lavin's guide Panorama of the Pan-Am he reprints a portion of the "Commandant of Police's Report" made following the exposition. The report notes that four policemen were appointed May 4, 1900 and that on opening day in 1901 there were 159 men reaching a maximum of 249 men on August 17, 1901. Likely no more than 250 badges were originally made, if that many, and today Levin is aware of approximately six still in existence including this example. Also see 1890s detective bureau badge #736 and 1901 Pan Am Brownies in the Klondike dexterity game in our section of larger comic character items.
