Item Description
1.5" multi-color centered by sepia photo of (Edwin Hurd) Conger, originally a representative from Iowa who later distinguished himself in military, political, and diplomatic fields. Conger was in Peking during Boxer Rebellion at turn of century and conducted negotiations for U.S. after capture of Peking by the Allies. He headed the commission to negotiate new commercial treaty with China of Oct. 8, 1902. Button design includes mother holding infant while soldier chases a fleeting Chinese figure. Has reverse backpaper naming both Balto. Badge of Maryland as well as National Advertising Co of Des Moines. The collet is a replacement with a tiny hairline where a 1/16" piece was removed so that it would fit within the button snugly. Cello is NM displaying Mint. Only our fourth seen. Early 1900s.
