This is a great badge but it needs a delicate repair to bring it back to its former glory. The piece is 6” tall comprised of a gold fabric rosette suspending five ribbons in a different color of gold. Text is on three of the four suspended ribbons. At the center of the rosette is a simulated gold luster nugget with an American flag extending to the side. Two of the five suspended ribbons still hold a simulated nugget. These are attached to the fabric by means of a very fine wire which pierces the fabric but then is apparently simply glued to the edge of the nugget. Three nuggets have come loose but are present. A repair would require a delicate touch but should not prove too difficult. The reverse of the piece has a sewn square of black mesh behind the upper rosette but there is no pin and apparently the piece was simply worn by inserting a straight pin through this mesh fabric backing. This piece is obviously a souvenir of an 1898 event held in California January 24th, 1898. Hand bills promoting the event titled it “California’s Golden Jubilee And Mining Fair” subtitled “Semi-Centennial Discovery Of Gold.” With the exception of the three loose nuggets, condition remains Exc. Only example we’ve seen.
