Item Description
7.75x9.75" An early document from the association responsible for the early preservation of the battle field. By the time the "Gettysburg Battle-Field Memorial Association" disbanded handing over responsibility to the US government in 1895 they had spent almost $700,000.00 building over 300 monuments and 17 miles of road connecting the expansive battle field. This early "Announcement" document features a letter by Joseph R. Ingersoll arguing for preservation of the battle field "...More Grand Than Waterloo". Also included is a transcript from the earliest "Correspondence" dated August 14, 1863 about taking action to preserve the battle field. A 1" split at the bottom of the fold of this 4 page document otherwise only minor handling wear. VF. A fascinating piece of Gettysburg history. Additional photos online.
