Auction #187 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 926 in auction 187
Item Description
Large 1.75" uses graphics from TR's 1898 governor campaign (see #173) to serve as a souvenir reading "First Reunion Rough Riders, Las Vegas, N.M. June 24, 25, 26, 1899." When TR's military unit returned from Cuba to Montauk, Long Island, he was asked how he was feeling and responded ..."I Feel As Big And Strong As A Bull Moose!" The unit also made plans for their first reunion for which this button is a rare artifact. Six hundred men, including TR, attended. See next item for the second reunion. Reunions were held 1899 through 1904 and then again 1949-1968. Button surface has small scratches in reflected light but only tiny stain that softly tones the uppermost flag stripes. Backpaper by W&H lightly age toned and reads "Rough Riders Reunion Souvenir: Compliments Of Ilfeld's The Plaza." Overall displays clean and VF with nice gloss. First we've seen and Rare.
