Beginning in 1838, the denomination and convenient size of the $10 Liberty Gold coin made it an instant success and one of the country's most circulated coins. Additionally, the eagle portrayed on the reverse is considered one of the most fascinating eagle designs on any U.S. coin. Because of their historical significance, these coins are valued higher than most modern 1/2 oz Gold coins. The design of the Gold Liberty Eagle was inspired from two sources: the 1816 Coronet-type Large Cent for the obverse and the American eagle for the reverse. The obverse features Lady Liberty encircled by 13 small stars with the date below. The reverse shows a bald eagle clutching three arrows and an olive branch in its talons. These coins were minted before President Franklin Roosevelt required Americans to turn in their Gold coins to be melted into bars to help combat the Great Depression. This recall made these coins that were previously common currency, a rare find.
