Item Description
3.5x5.5" vintage matte postcard depicting several members of the 1914 Boston Braves National League ball club highlighted by the presence of future National Baseball Hall of Fame second baseman, Johnny Evers, appearing in front alongside the rose covered horseshoe. Identification at bottom of photo reads "Gov. Pothier of R.I. Presenting Loving Cup". Handwritten note on back reads "Nat. League grounds Columbus Ave.". Based on the commercial signage in the background, photo was taken in Boston, Mass. Fellow HOF'er, Rabbit Maranville was the star shortstop for this club and is likely amongst the group of teammates standing behind Evers, although we have been unable to positively identify any of the others. The 1914 Braves were surprising winners of the National League pennant before stunning the baseball world by sweeping the Philadelphia Athletics in four straight games to take the 1914 World Series under manager, George Stallings. Lt. even corner wear w/toning visible on divided back, not postally used. Fine. Richard Merkin Collection.
