Item Description
3.25x5.25" vintage matte real photo postcard depicting ten team members in full uniform along w/a young mascot and one gentleman dressed in formal attire posed in front of a commercial building w/baseball equipment prominently displayed in the foreground. Hand stamp at bottom reads "TOLUCA ILL. 1909". Divided postcard back remains blank and unused. Velox stamp box on back dates the postcard to 1900-10. Highlighting this postcard is the presence of an African American ballplayer standing in center back row amongst an all white baseball club. After the turn of the Century, it is very rare to find an integrated baseball team prior to Jackie Robinson breaking the Major League color barrier in 1947. Back exhibits scattered staining around the edges along w/paper loss in four corners consistent w/scrapbook mounting but does not affect or detract from front at all. Fine. Richard Merkin Collection.
