Item Description
2-3/8x2-7/8". Goudey's 1934 Big League Gum set consists of 96 cards. Goudey retained the cards sturdy construction, painted images and blazing color that had set a modern standard in terms of eye-appeal. Minor tweaks to the card front included discreet line-drawing graphics of ball-playing figures in action, and a showcase of one of the game's most prominent heroes.
Henry Emmett Manush (1901-1971), nicknamed "Heinie", was an American baseball outfielder. He played professional baseball for 20 years from 1920 to 1939, including 17 years in Major League Baseball for the Detroit Tigers (1923-1927), St. Louis Browns (1928-1930), Washington Senators (1930-1935), Boston Red Sox (1936), Brooklyn Dodgers (1937-1938), and Pittsburgh Pirates (1938-1939). After retiring as a player, Manush was a minor league manager from 1940 to 1945, a scout for the Boston Braves in the late 1940s and a coach for the Senators from 1953 to 1954. He also scouted for the expansion Senators in the early 1960s. He was a one time All-Star, AL batting champion and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964.
