13-3/8x16" artboard has pen and ink original art by Brian Bolland for 2000 AD Prog 197, published by Fleetway Publications Jan. 31, 1981. Covers features amazing image of Judge Dredd being blown from his Lawmaster motorcycle as an atomic bomb explodes in the background, destroying a number of Mega-City One buildings. Art has been signed by Bolland just below center right margin in red felt tip pen. Artboard has "2000 AD Featuring Judge Dredd" title stat as well as other cover indicia stats with "Find The Judge Child...Or Mega City One Dies!" subtitle stat at bottom. This was changed for the final published cover to include different text in block at lower right. This issue featured the first part of the Judge Dredd story Pirates Of The Black Atlantic by John Wagner and Alan Grant. Upper left corner has stat with Prog number and publication date; this has heavy rippling and some scattered aging. Top margin has .5x2.5" sliver of surface paper lift, only slightly extending into art area; area affected is top, blank area of mushroom cloud. Aside from small spot of staining on mushroom cloud's stem, rest of art remains clean and VF/Exc. Back has pair of Fleetwood copyright inkstamps as well as stamped printer job w/inked notations. Back of artboard has some surface paper lifts across top edge, not affecting art on front. Great early 2000 AD Dredd cover art from the character's early years, featuring original art by one the British comic artists most closely associated with the character. One of the best Judge Dredd covers to ever come to auction.
