Sulzer was elected governor of New York in 1912, and was ultimately impeached in 1913 after crossing Tammany Hall. This bred a bitter resentment and rivalry w/Al Smith, who was the leader in the state house and led the impeachment. Sulzer ran for governor again in 1914 on a joint American Party/Prohibition Party ticket, but came in third place. He was able to siphon enough votes from the Tammany-backed Democratic candidate to spoil the election and give it to the Republican nominee. He was the only NY Governor to be impeached.
