Item Description
9” tall. Bold polychrome United States Frigate Guerriere Comm MacDonnough bound to Russia July 1818 w/rare depiction of a small Connecticut town engaged in the defense of their fortress against the British under the banner "The Gallant Defense of Stonington August, 9th, 1814. Stonington is free whilst her Heroes have one gun left" on reverse. Believed unique and first cataloged as #134 in Robert McCauley’s landmark 1942 Liverpool Transfer Designs on Anglo-American Pottery before being designated U.6 by Arman. Inpainting at right of Stonington transfer including parts of text in banners above and below. Two repaired cracks on polychromed scene seen only upon close inspection under black light. If there are other areas of fill, they are undetectable to us. Restored to Exc. Rex & Patti Stark Collection.
Sir Thomas Hardy's British squadron took positions off Stonington Point in Aug. of 1814 as he demanded the Connecticut town surrender. The town Selectmen replied "We shall defend the place to the last extremity; should it be destroyed, we shall perish in its ruins." The three day bombardment amazingly saw no American perish despite the local militia rebuffing an attempted landing. British ships took grave damage w/21 dead and 50 wounded.a
