Item Description
7x23" artboard has Al Capp’s pencil and ink original art for Sept. 13, 1935 daily strip. Strip features four panels in addition to introductory text panel, showing Abner returning home, lamenting to Mammy Yokum that was unable to catch up to Pappy Yokum, who thinks Mammy's stew poisoned him. It's discovered horse liniment accidentally fell into the soup and both Abner and Mammy have a laugh over the misunderstanding. Last panel shows Pappy having meeting w/his friend Marryin' Sam, relaying news of his supposed poisoning and deciding he needs to look into a divorce. Abner appears in two panels while Mammy appears in three panels. Pappy and Marryin' Sam appear in final panel. Capp has signed bottom of text panel. Third art panel has United Features copyright strip. Penciled "A Brainy Decision" title at top margin. Artboard margins show moderate aging and scattered wear. Left corners have been clipped. Spot of staining on word balloon in first art panel, but rest of art remains clean w/just some aging at edges. Fine overall. Artboard is attached to mat w/mounting tape along top edge and is ready for framing. As Li'l Abner began in 1934, this is a wonderful example of Capp's original art from the second year of this historic comic strip.
