Item Description
1.5x4.5" tin w/cello end caps. Produced in Boston, Massachusetts and sold for 10 cents each when empty and 25 cents when filled w/thread. End cap reads "Souvenir of Sarah's Suffrage Victory Campaign Fund" and "Help Cut The Fetters." Labor related theme is in honor of Sarah G. Bagley, founder of the Lowell, Massachusetts Female Labor Reform Movement who worked at the Hamilton Manufacturing Co. She found increasing oppressive and dangerous working conditions, particularly for women and campaigned for a ten-hour working day, forcing the MA legislature to address the working conditions in the textile mills. The cylinder itself has three holes which allow thread to be pulled through. End caps are removable to allow access for replacing thread spools. Small area of missing cello on curl of "Sarah's" side cello at 9 o'clock. Otherwise light wear and handling. Overall extremely Fine.
