Item Description
These famous cereal give-away buttons were the inspiration of the master creator of premiums for kids, designer Sam Gold. These 13/16" litho buttons went into post-war cereal boxes issued as five subsets of 18 (each subset including Superman) over a two year period, 1945-1946, so that in the end 86 different buttons comprised a set. Characters include the aforementioned Superman as well as Blondie and Dagwood, Dick Tracy, Felix the Cat, Flash Gordon, Popeye, Little Orphan Annie, The Phantom and many more. Offered here are three pieces of ephemera related to these classic premiums. 10.5x11" spec proof sheet on newsprint is marked 1946 and features three different Sunday newspaper banner ads. Ads are individually numbered, each featuring three different button designs as well as different promotional text. Button designs include - Skeezix, Smokey Stover and Harold Teen; Smitty, Lillums and Dick Tracy; Kayo, Herby and Superman. Each has specs for ad size as well as "Week-end Comic Section" notation printed below design. Proof sheet is evenly aged and has slighty uneven edges as trimmed. Folded into uneven quaters, sheet has had tape reinforcements added to back of fold lines. Fine overall. First we've seen and the only example known to exist. Comes w/two clipped comic book pages of the era, each featuring different ad for Pep buttons; one showing "Comic Buttons" while other promotes "Military Insignia And Warplane Buttons." Both have ad for Superman radio show. Both are evenly aged w/varying degrees of wear and just come along. Both are Gold Archive examples kept in their files for reference. From the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold.
