Item Description
6x10”. Two types of baseball premium pictures were issued by the magazine Sensacion during the 1946-47 Winter League season. One series of 27 features Cuban stars while another series of 11 Major League stars was also issued. Printed in color on newsprint paper stock, fronts have large portraits or posed action shots w/the player name in a fancy bottom border. Backs have lengthy career summaries and full stats, along w/an ad on bottom margin. A season ending album was produced which incorporated every premium from each of the two previously mentioned series into a “bound” portfolio. Presented here is the key premium of the entire Cuban and American players series, Martin Dihigo, the only baseball player inducted into four different National Baseball Halls of Fame: the United States, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Mexico. Proudly adorned in his Cienfuegos Cuban baseball uniform. The greatest two-way threat in Negro League baseball history, Dihigo led his league in both batting and pitching categories multiple times over the course of more than a decade and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977. As is the case with the vast majority of surviving examples, this has been neatly trimmed down from its original 8x11.75” page. Moderate margin wear w/a series of staple holes across top where this was removed from a Cienfuegos team portfolio. However, paper remains supple, and image is bold, strong and distinct. Exceptional eye appeal. With the recent inclusion of Negro League stats within the MLB historical records, the hobby has seen a huge spike in interest for those items depicting former Negro League ballplayers, especially the bigger stars and National Baseball Hall of Famers. Dihigo certainly fits the bill there so don’t pass up this opportunity to acquire a rarely seen baseball artifact. Richard Merkin Collection.
