Item Description
2.75x4.75" on stock. Dated October 21, 1868. Event held in Montclair, NJ. Figures mentioned include John L. Thomas Jr. and Henry Winter Davis, two late legislators and well-known anti-slavery advocates. The discussed the topic of "Unconditional Unionism." The Unconditional Union Party was a faction within the National Union Party that was founded in 1863 until it eventually merged w/ the Republican Party during the early years of Reconstruction. Henry Winter Davis was a Radical Republican and staunch abolitionist from Maryland, who served in Congress from 1855-1861 and again from 1863 until his death in 1865. He was credited for his role in abolishing slavery in Maryland and preventing his state from seceding. He was one of the authors of the Wade-Davis Bill in 1864 which promoted the Reconstruction of the South that was much more radical than Lincoln's Ten Percent Plan. Lincoln ultimately vetoed this legislation. Only light wear. Exc. An interesting piece of anti-slavery history.
